How to use it

Inputs and units
Use decimal 24-hour times, such as 17.5 for 5:30 pm, and an unpaid break in minutes.
Formula
Hours = elapsed time between start and end − break / 60. An end earlier than start is treated as the next day.
Worked example
22 to 6 with a 30-minute break gives 7.5 worked hours.
Assumptions and limitations
Covers one shift under 24 hours. Equal start and end mean zero hours. Does not account for daylight-saving changes, multiple breaks or payroll rounding.
